As the year draws to an end, I’d like to take this time to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a happy new year for 2020!
It’s been quite a year for us here at the Warriors of the Cucumber. Best Night Light has gone from strength to strength, having been downloaded over 500,000 times now. We have also been busy trying to update and publish all our back catalogue onto iOS and Amazon, although this has taken much much longer than we originally anticipated (Not helped in part by the Office Mac being out of action for a month after updating to OS Catalina went wrong, Massive thanks to Rick, Paul and Mike at The Game Creators for helping us sort it out).
I’m confident though that 2020 will be a great year. We’re planning on having the whole back catalogue finished, as well as a couple of new games released, but more news on these in the next few months.
And that’s that, this blog post is one of the last things I need to do before closing up the office for the Christmas break. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and we’ll be back in the new year!

It feels like a while since I last wrote one of these; Christmas has been and gone, and the Winter is starting to fade away, and the beginnings of Spring are upon us. So without further ado, let’s dive straight in…
Work is progressing steadily the last couple of months. A few weeks ago we had three separate parts, The Menu’s, The basic gameplay, and the hangar scene; Now all three have been combined into one playable part! It’s still quite a way off being finished, but here’s where we’re at so far..
All efforts this last couple of weeks have been on creating new media assets for background scenery around the arena. The picture below shows the current progress (The white cube in the middle is just a placeholder, marking out where the Arena will go)

The next tasks, once the scenery is finished, will be to get the challenges working, progressing through the levels, and getting the rest of the menu system working.
Best Night Light:
Lot’s of Best Night Light news this month. There seems to be no stopping our popular night light app!
Firstly, barely a week into the new year, we reached 200000+ downloads! We feel like rock stars! 😊
Secondly, plans are afoot for a new update for Google Play and Amazon. This update sees the introduction of soothing background sounds and some new colour sets for the lava lamp as well as the usual bug fixes.
The third and possibly most exciting thing this month is that work is underway preparing for releasing Best Night Light on the iOS store!

As the last few hours of September tick away, Autumn is well and truly upon us. The weather has changed like the seasons, and a whole new batch of really awesome TV shows will soon be upon us.
It’s been quite a hectic time here at WotC towers. We’ve been trying to keep up with all the various Game and App events taking place all over the world. Sadly we hadn’t attended any this year, but a few of our associates did and the social medias were full of exciting tales and brilliant photos.
We have plenty of news of our own however, so without further ado, let’s get on with it.
The first, and most exciting bit of news we have this month, is that we have a new game just going through the last phases of beta testing.
Keepy Uppy King is the classic playground game of keepy uppy on your Mobile! It’s simple to pick up and play, but it takes real skill and practice to master it.
It uses the Google Play Services High Score Board to keep track of scores, and see how you’re doing against your friends!
In fact, as soon as I have finished this blog post, I’m going to have another go at the Beta myself and try and take back 1st place! Which was snatched away by BeefyCFC earlier on today.
It’s all in the hands of the beta testers now. Assuming no huge show stopping bugs are found, we’re hoping to have it released in the next few weeks! So stay tuned for more news as it happens! If you wanted to join our beta team, please drop an email to email@example.com
Unfortunately, progress on Night of the Endless Dead has not been so forthcoming. Although we have a great selection of models to use for the players and zombies, we are having a spot of bother getting them to animate properly.
We have a couple of ideas to try and I’m sure we’ll be back on track soon, but for the time being this game is being put on a back burner.
Whilst the animation problem is being worked on, all focus is now on getting Snakerunner completed. For those who don’t know, Snakerunner is a re-imagining of the classic snake game, in 3d, with spaceships!
The video above is taken from an earlier version intended for PC, the Mobile version has a completely redesigned UI to make it easier for touch screens.
We have been working on this game on and off since 2003! And depending on how well received it is on Android and iOS, we’re considering making a PC version afterwards and distributing it on Steam! (But this is a long way off yet!)
The last thing we have been working on this month is Best Night Light. Our Night light app has now been downloaded over 170,000 times! Making it our most successful app by far.
The biggest changes to this are in preparation for the forthcoming iOS release, but there are also one or two other changes/bug fixes.
The biggest one of these is removal of the trophies. This is only a temporary measure while we look into a trophy system which doesn’t require quite so many permissions as the Google Play Services one, as there seemed to be a few users who really objected to this.
That’s nearly all the time we have I’m afraid, but before you go, here’s the usual round up of the bestest and funniest things from the internets from this month.

Here’s the August news update from the Warriors of the Cucumber. The eagle eyed amongst you might have noticed the absence of last month’s update, I can only apologise for that and as of next month I’ve employed the services of Les (Chimpo Gigglefish from the Beta Test Team) to assist me in the writing of these posts.
It’s certainly been a busy few months for us, with a major update released for Best Night Light as well as getting the models ready for our upcoming zombie shooter, Night of the Endless Dead! But more news on this later.
And so without further pause or hesitation, on with the news…
In July we released a new update for Best Night Light. This update contained a whole stack of new features, many of which had been suggested by users, as well as bug fixes, and more modern UI and other general improvements.
Don’t worry Kindle owners, this update will be coming to the Amazon App Store soon.
We’re happy to say that this month Best Night Light reached the 150,000+ downloads mark! I’d like to personally thank each and every one of you guys and girls out there who have downloaded it 😊

Over the last few months, the bulk of the work on Night of the Endless Dead has been designing and planning, and getting media ready. Below is a small selection of the Zombies which we’ll be using for target practice!
There are still a few zombies to get ready and test, but we’re hoping that soon we’ll have something playable ready for testing.

Also this month, we got a mac! It’s only an i5 Mac Mini but it’s all ours 😀 The team need a while to figure it all out, and there is a few legalities involving the iOS App Store to investigate, but we hope that we will be releasing our entire back catalogue for iOS asap, starting with Best Night Light in the not too distant future 😀

Well, June certainly been a month for exciting news what with Apple announcing iOS 11 and a plethora of other beautifully sleek but hideously expensive hardware, and the E3 over in Los Angeles which saw lots of exciting new games and consoles announced. We’re all PlayStation here at WotC Towers, so the news of a new XBone isn’t as earth shattering as it is to some, but Bethesda’s announcement of Fallout 4 VR is something which caused sweaty palms and palpitations!
Who knows, when next year’s show season rolls round again, we may even have a stand there?
Anyway, enough blue sky thinking, on to the here and now…
We recently ran a survey for users of Best Night Light, allowing us to find out a little bit more about them and giving them a chance to voice their opinions on how we could make Best Night Light better.
We had an overwhelming response. The survey helped reinforce the general feedback we’d already got from users reviews and emails we’ve received.
Work is now well underway on the update. Starting first with an overhaul of the look of the app, to make room for new timer controls on each of the light modes and to give Best Night Light a fresher more modern appearance.
We’re hoping to have the update finished and released on July 1st, so stay tuned for more news about that as it happens. If you can’t wait then maybe join our team of beta testers by sending an email to us >here<.
We were also happy to have “Online Junction” feature Best Night Light on their YouTube channel. It’s a simple preview of what to expect from the app from installation through to using the various modes.

This game started out as a “Game in a Week” challenge, before it was overcomplicated beyond all recognition by our resident ideas guy. It’s an endless zombie shooter where you have to fend off waves of putrid undead and try and stay alive as long as possible (Ammo and zombies permitting 😝 lol).
This was the first thing we’ve ever posted about online with a #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag. It seems to have been received well by the Indie Developer community.
We’re hoping it will be a fun packed zombie slaying fest for you all to enjoy. Although it won’t be our usual PEGI 3 rating!
Those of you who do visit our Facebook page will probably have noticed the new store we have. From here you have way access to all our titles split into groups by platform.

Welcome to the May news update from the Warriors of the Cucumber.
The last few weeks have been lovely and sunny, with only the occasional bout of rain (I do live in the UK mind, so the rain at least is not unexpected, lol). The kind of weather that my Mum would make me go outside and play rather than sitting around the house coding on my old ZX Spectrum.
Fortunately, I’m much older and wiser now, and I have a laptop so I am free to do both 😊 Lol

It takes a surprising amount of time to write one of these blogs, and (much to the boss’ dismay) they are seldom quite finished when the deadline rolls round. The is it seems an awful lot more work involved in writing apps and games than just programming
This last few months have been an exciting delve into the realms of networking, marketing, and more recently web optimization and trouble shooting when I had to turn my hand to fixing the website during it’s downtime (but more on that later).
So, let me apologise for this update being a little late, and without further ado, on with the news
We have recently upgraded our website to allow HTTPS connections to help keep our visitors safe and secure. You’ll notice we now have a little padlock icon somewhere near the address bar of your browser (It depends on which browser you’re using).
This means that whenever you are connected to our website all traffic to and from will be safely encrypted. 😊
Thanks to SEOSiteCheckUp.Com we have also given the website a thorough going over to optimize it not only to improve how easy it is to find our stuff online, but also to speed up the website to make your experience here better.
Unfortunately, as is often the way with these things, it led to a few hours of down time on the website (For the technically knowledgeable out there, apparently our new CDN, intended to speed up our website, was incompatible with the SSL certificate we’re using) but it’s all back up and running now.
Our night light app, Best Night Light is by far our most successful app having been downloaded over 115,000 times on Google Play alone. As a big thank you to the users of Best Night Light, we recently thumbed down through all the reviews looking at what we can change to make it better for you.
Here are some of the ways we are looking at improving it already…
- A few people have been asking for the timer to be added to the other two light modes, which we have done. We are also looking at making the range of timer values bigger.
- New lava lamp colour modes.
- Trophies! trophies to share with your friends.
- A few people have complained about the adverts we use at the bottom of the screen, so in the new update we’re planning on giving you not one, but two different ways to remove the banner advert!
- We are also trying to reduce the size of the next version after someone complained the app was too large :/ We’ve done a few technical things to make the app smaller, but have also added new features which may make it larger.
And sadly, a couple of things people have asked for which haven’t made it to this update.
- Screen-casting, sadly this is not possible to add at the minute.
- Background sounds/music.
We’ve also got a survey to be circulated later in the week, so if you could fill that in it would help us tremendously.

This finger gun shootout from “Tales of the Borderlands”, which reminds me very much of a similar shootout in a very old film called “Blackbeard’s Ghost”. Which, if you haven’t seen already, you should as it’s very funny.

It seems spring is well and truly upon us here in the UK, for the last few days now the skies have been blue, the road sides are alive with daffodils and tulips, and the wildlife seems to have woken up from its winter slumber.
The first thing I need to do is apologise for the lack of news and updates from us for the last couple of months. This has been caused mostly by a lack of news worthy news and update worthy updates. Although we have been busy with various things, it’s taken us a while before we’ve had anything really to show you! We shall try hard to be more interesting in the upcoming months.
The upside to this is that this update is bursting at the seams with news and stuff 😃
Work with Snakerunner is progressing slowly. Most of the User Interface has now been completed, there is still a couple of bits to finish and some extra polish to be added with things like button animation and extra sound effects.
It was hoped that there would be a video to demonstrate the UI but as I write this, it’s not yet been finished so here are some screen grabs of it to whet your appetite. Keep your eyes peeled though, as I’m sure it will be in the May update along with other exciting Snakerunner news! I can tell you however, that it is working properly with the new Samsung S8 super widescreen 18.5:9 aspect ratio although testing and fixing this did take up a day or two.
There has also been some time spent planning how to allow us to expand Snakerunner in the future with downloadable “Level Packs”, each featuring several new Tournaments, Challenges and levels to play!
There is even talk of a Snakerunner prize giveaway to celebrate its release, with a selection of prizes! Although nothing has been finalised yet, so as always follow us on Facebook, Twitter and G+ for more news as and when it happens 😊
Over the last couple of months, we have been going through our existing apps and games with a fine-tooth comb trying to weed out any remaining bugs and making sure that everything is as secure and up to date as we can.
Already this year we have pushed out updates to fix bugs in ‘Best Night Light’ and ‘Colour Name Quiz Advance’, and we are currently working on a recently discovered bug in ‘Percentage Resolution Tool’. These updates have purely been bug fixes and there have been no new features added this time round.>/p>

There is also a new update to Best Night Light in the works. A few people have written to us asking for the timer function to be added to the Mood and Lava lamp modes, so that’s exactly what is going to happen. 😃 We are also looking into adding a few extra lava lamp colour schemes as well!
We are hoping that this latest update will be live on the Play Store and Amazon App Store at some point in May.

It’s not too often that we feature some of our Windows software in the blog, but during our searches of YouTube one of us turned up this Video Tutorial for our ‘Bitmap Font Creator’ and how to use its output in the GameMaker Studio!
GameMaker Studio (v2 now available!) is a simple and intuitive Drag and Drop game development environment, created by ‘YoYo Games’
Our pool of test devices has increased recently with the addition of not only a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, but also an Apple iPhone 7 plus! We’re happy to report that so far none of our apps to date have had any problems running on the curved screen of the Edge!
All our software is tested on as wider range of devices as possible, we have a selection of in house devices (Both android and iOS, tablet and mobile phone) as well as a team of dedicated beta testers who subject apps and games to a vigorous period before general release.
Sadly though, we are having to say goodbye to our bottom end Android test device. The Game Creators (The awesome people behind AGK, the language we use to write mobile software with) have decided to drop support for older ARM v6 cpu’s and below; So although our minimum spec for Android is still 2.3.3, it’s time to say good bye to the faithful Samsung Galaxy Y.

I’d like to start this post by wishing you a happy new year! It seems like the holidays were a long time ago now, everything is returning to the usual routines. We’re all back and hard at work after a lovely couple of weeks off.
The new year for me is a time to think about what the coming year is going to bring. For us here at the Warriors of the Cucumber, 2017 is going to be our biggest year yet! We are sure our next game release will be a huge success for a number of reasons; firstly it’s incredibly playable (or at least the early pre release builds are), secondly we’re planning to release it on Android, iOS and Facebook; so it’s going to be available to the largest audience yet! And thirdly, there is going to be lots of publicity and the like, merchandise and a competition to win some fairly cool prizes. We also have a few other new projects on the planning board, which may see release in the coming year. More news on these though later in the year.
So whats in this months update? Without further ado, here’s the latest…
First off, the website has had a tiny little bit of a makeover. The home page has been updated a bit to make it more interesting and informative, a few of the other pages have been improved, notably the ‘about us’ section which now includes a brief history of the Warriors of the Cucumber. There is now a contact form on the ‘Contact Us’ page which makes it a whole load easier if you want to get in touch with us.
Unfortunately whilst performing the update it was necessary to take the website offline for a few hours, but it was soon back up and running 🙂
Over the last month or two a few bugs have been discovered in some of our apps. We will be addressing these in the upcoming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled for updates!
Although a great many bugs are discovered by our team of beta testers before release, unfortunately one or two always manage to sneak past us. Which is why it’s so great that you guys are so forthcoming with bug reports and suggestions.
We usually try and fix important bugs as soon as they crop up. Minor bugs are added to the list and when there is enough of them we’ll have a bug squashing session like this one.
I was lucky enough to have a quick chat with Rick Vanner from The Game Creators the other day. Rick is one of the founders of the company and is something of a celebrity to us.
We have used TGC’s programing languages for well over a decade, and without the support of the developers and the TGC community we wouldn’t have been able to do half the stuff we have.
During our chat, Rick was interested in what we had achieved with AGK, and was impressed with our list of titles and how well they were performing.
The highlight of the conversation had to be the bit where Rick said he had only yesterday been playing Colour Name Quiz Advance, and how it was a unique game.

The final piece of news this month is our acquisition of an Emoonland VR Headset. After spending several hours watching 3D videos of the solar system and massive underwater vistas populated by fish of all shapes and size, and of course the obligatory roller coaster ride.
The supplied PicoVR software store is in Chinese, which was a bit of a disappointment but since its mostly for development purposes, its not the end of the world.
The potential for game play with it is staggering, although there is an awful lot of research and experimentation to be done beforehand. I’d like to see something like Space Invaders of Missile Command done in a Virtual Reality environment
Augmented Reality is another potential use of the VR headset, it has a window on the front to allow the devices camera to be used to display the users surroundings on screen. Already there has been experiments done towards making a Colour Blindness simulator.

Already the decorations are up and there is a small pile of presents growing under the tree. Writing this blog post is one of the last things to do before I stop work for a few days, and spend some well deserved time with the family watching Christmas films and all the other associated festive activities 😀
As 2017 looms on the horizon, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank a few of those who have helped make 2016 such an exciting year for us. Firstly, everyone of you who has downloaded our software, thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Next is the guys at The Game Creators, Thanks for AGK and being so quick to fix bugs in it; And lastly I’d like to thank our tireless team of beta testers, The guys who get to spot all (hopefully) of the problems so they can be fixed (hopefully) before being released. You are all amazing, and without you none of this would have been possible!
We have recently updated out ever-popular night light app, ‘Best Night Light’. As well as a couple of bug fixes the new version introduced a couple of new features. You can now select the colour of the night light, and we have added a screen lock function to prevent accidentally turning the light off when holding your device. You can now also mute and unmute the button sounds from the menu.
Best Night Light has now been downloaded over 55,000 times, and a lot of the bug fixes and new features added this version were the result of feedback left by people who use the app on a regular basis.
We’re also happy to announce that Best Night Light is now also available to download from Amazon. There is a link below 🙂

‘Newsflash’ is one of the handy little features built into our game template. When a Newsflash enabled app or game is run it connects to the internet (if available) and checks to see if there is a Newsflash, if so it downloads it and displays it. The download itself is tiny, only about 250 bytes, so even those on metered connections can rest easy.
Newsflash allows us to pass on a message specifically to users of that app or game. If you we’re brought to this post by a screen like this then you have already seen it in action. We plan on using it in conjunction with Social media to announce news, competitions, updates and the like.
The last, but possibly most exciting thing this blog post is this screen shot from our forthcoming release, ‘Snakerunner’.
The last few weeks have been spent tweaking the basic UI elements and getting a rough layout in place. As you can see, by connecting to Facebook with Snakerunner you will be able to see your buddy’s scores and share game progress and achievements.
For those who don’t have Facebook, or simply don’t want to log in there is the Skip button, although obviously the more social aspects of the game won’t be available.

All around the world people are enjoying the lunar spectacle, even here in the UK, where unfortunately the British weather has somewhat spoiled the sights by being cloudy and miserable. My Girlfriend is a keen astronomer and we were hoping to get the telescope out, but even without it we did get to see some fairly epic views of the moon, albeit through breaks in the cloud.
Anyway, I’m back inside in the warm now with a steaming cup of tea to warm my fingers before we carry on with what’s been happening here at the Warriors of the Cucumber. 🙂

First of all I would like to thank everyone who has downloaded CNQA, According to the Store analytics it’s been downloaded worldwide, from The US, through the UK, Somalia, and India! I’d also like to thank our indispensable team of Beta testers who have been playing CNQA non stop for the last month trying to iron out all the bugs.
After some feedback from users, we have pushed out an update for CNQA. This update addresses a couple of bugs which seem to have slipped through the beta testing process as well as introducing a new stats screen to allow you to review your answers from the last game.

Amazon App Store
We are currently getting ready to bring our range of apps and games to the Amazon App Store. We’re working on creating Amazon App Store ready files for uploading (Although this has unfortunately been delayed as we wait for a bug fix in the software we use.) and getting the store pages ready.
We hope to have all this done before December, bug fix allowing. More news on this as it happens.
What with the release of the Sony & Samsung VR Headset, and of course the Oculus Rift it seems that Virtual Reality is getting one step closer to becoming a household everyday thing. Although I imagine it’ll be a long time yet before we see anything close to James Halliday’s OASIS from Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One.
Google Cardboard is a low-cost VR headset solution designed to work with Android phones, and we are hoping to lay hands on one soon with the view of exploring the potential for developing immersive VR/AR games. Exciting times indeed.
We’ve written a ‘Cardboard’ on the Christmas list, and fingers crossed that the man in the red suit thinks we’ve been good this year.
